Flecking & Denser feather

I just found this quote about/from Alan Marchant when I was looking for another article about him:

"He felt that there is a direct correlation between denser feather and migration of melanin causing flecking."

I certainly noticed this during the 2011 season. I hoped it was because of the mother of my denser feathered young, but sadly denser feather and flecking is correlated(*).

Luckily he also explains how he dealt with the issue:

"The partnership started to clear the flecking by breeding a large number of birds and by keeping those with the feather quality, size and shape. Gradually they managed to get on top of the flecking by pairing the cleaner birds together."

So I better have a good season this year so I can select the less flecked once and try to get rid of it year by year...

(*) My apologies for this statistical term, but I can't hide part of my nature
